Communion Bread Recipe – Hostia comes from the Latin ‘Hostia‘, which means sacrifice. Host Bread is also known as Communion Bread. The bread material used in Jesus’ last supper with the apostles is bread without yeast. The practice of Jesus and the Apostles is rooted in the Jewish tradition of using only unleavened bread for the Jewish Passover Supper. Every church requires that the hosts be prepared from wheat. The custom of using unleavened bread to celebrate the Eucharist / Holy Communion became common practice throughout the Church in the VIII and IX centuries. In the XI century, the Latin Church decided to use only unleavened bread. Furthermore, the hosts had to be made of pure and new wheat, so that there was no danger of spoilage. Therefore, bread made from other ingredients, even from grains of rice or mixed with some other substance which is not wheat in such a way that people no longer view it as bread, is not a legal material for use in the Sacrifice and the Eucharist. It is a grave offense to include other ingredients in the bread for the Eucharist, for example, fruit or sugar, or honey.

In July 2017, the Vatican released a letter to all bishops around the world regarding the new rule of bread (host) and wine used in Holy Communion. Currently, the Catholic Church strictly prohibits the use of gluten-free bread. This decision was taken to prevent the use of bread that could have been genetically modified by irresponsible individuals. This official letter is by order of Pope Francis and sent directly by Cardinal Robert Sarah who is the prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Sacraments of the Catholic Church. According to Cardinal Robert, the bread to be used for Holy Communion must contain enough protein in the wheat without the addition of additives or other additives to add flavor or color to the bread. Cardinal Robert also added that the bread to be used in the celebration of Holy Mass must be unleavened, pure wheat and freshly made bread. The Church usually determines the material and method of making the hosts, Church law does not specify who can make hosts for the celebration of the Eucharist. However, it is usually the religious leaders who can decide who can make the hosts. For those who are able, it is better if they ask for and gets permission from the local religious leaders, then they can hold a host. This attitude should be taken to ensure the validity of the host. This is what makes the bread usually done by people who are not only conspicuous because of their piety, but also skilled in doing it while being equipped with the appropriate equipment.

 

The shape of the host bread is generally round, especially in the Catholic church. This is done not without reason, but because the round shape of this bread can be more easily swallowed and the round shape is similar to the traditional form of bread that is usually made in the land of Jesus’ birth.   1. Preheat oven to 400°

  2. Combine ingredients and knead for 3 minutes.

  3. Roll dough to 1/8″ thick.

  4. Cut out circles using a 1 1/2″ cookie cutter.

  5. Transfer wafers to baking sheet.

  6. Prick wafers with fork 2 or 3 times each.

  7. Bake at 400° for 5-8 minutes, until just beginning to brown.
